The Central Midlands
Council of Governments is studying public transportation
needs in Batesburg-Leesville. Public transportation could
include buses or vans taking people places in
Batesburg-Leesville, and also between Batesburg-Leesville
and Columbia. The survey is intended to assess the
transportation patterns of Batesburg-Leesville residents to
determine if public transportation is desired by the
community.
Based on the results of
the survey and other study elements, the project will
provide recommendations for possible public transportation
routes and service types. The study will also estimate
costs to operate the service and identify potential funding
sources.
“Public transportation
has been shown to stimulate the economy and provides a
valuable way to connect residents to jobs, school, and other
daily activities,” said Reginald Simmons, Director of
Transportation for the Central Midlands Council of
Governments. “We are conducting this study to determine if
there is a need for public transportation in
Batesburg-Leesville.”
No public transportation
services are currently available in Batesburg-Leesville.
The Central Midlands Regional Transit Authority operates
buses in the Columbia area, but only a few routes extend
into West Columbia in Lexington County.
